What's Happening

San José is becoming a place where biking is a regular and common activity for people of all ages and abilities. Better Bike Plan 2025 will update San José Bike Plan 2020 to create a bicycle network that is:

Asset 5.png

Safe. We want to eliminate roadway fatalities and major injuries for all – people walking, bicycling, and driving – as soon as possible. This bike plan supports our Vision Zero San José initiative.

Asset 6.png

Comfortable. We want to create a bicycle network that enriches the lives of everyone who lives, works, or plays in San José.

Asset 7.png

Convenient. We want more people biking! This plan will help us toward the goal of at least 15% of trips made by bike by 2040.

Building Momentum

Our first on-street bike lanes were installed in the 1970s. Since then, we have built over 320 miles of on-street bikeways and 59 miles of trails.

Changes in transportation and land use have created opportunities for a more viable biking environment in San José. We’re leveraging these opportunities to create a world-class bicycle network.

This Plan will also build on the City’s long-term General Plan (Envision San José 2040) goals for providing space for infill and transit-oriented development, creating accessible public spaces, and weaving urban villages into the fabric of the larger city through the Urban Villages program.

We can’t do this without you!

We’ll be at the following upcoming events—stop by our table to learn about and provide input on the Plan!

Project Timeline

Phase 1: Gathering information [FALL 2018]

Last fall, we heard from hundreds of people at events including public workshops, Viva Calle, and neighborhood meetings. We learned about where people would like to bike, what keeps them from biking more, and how the City can help overcome these barriers through better bikeways or more support programs. We also studied traffic and safety data to learn where improvements are most needed.

Phase 2: initial recommendations and Community Input [SPRING-SUMMER 2019]

We’ve taken your great ideas and are using them to help us draft recommendations for new projects and programs that support bicycling. Look for our initial recommendations at our community workshop in June.

Phase 3: Creating the Plan [Winter 2020]

The last phase will be drafting the Plan for your review and getting projects ready for implementation. We expect to have a Draft Plan in Winter 2020.
